CHAPTER FIVE

Kelvin had already driven for a long way when he realised that Vasila had fallen asleep.

She had slipped forward just a little so that her head was almost on his shoulder.

As he glanced at her, he thought again how lovely and ethereal she was and it worried him to wonder what would happen to her in the future.

After all at her age she could not remain in hiding for ever and either the people she was afraid of would find her or she would get into serious trouble.

But he had to concentrate on his horses and he was determined to get far away from Windsor as quickly as he possibly could.

The sun had now risen slowly up the sky, but was still not too hot and, as the chaise was open, he enjoyed feeling the fresh air on his face.

After the heat of India, it was very welcome and it gave him an invigorating feeling he had not had for years.

But then he was worrying about the future again not only for himself but no less for Vasila.

He drove on.

It was long after breakfast-time and getting towards midday when he decided that he wanted something to eat and indeed the horses should have a short rest.

They had passed several Posting inns on the way, but he thought that it would be a mistake to stop at any of them.

He looked instead for a small inn where it would be unlikely that there would be many other visitors.

He found one a mile further on and it was a pretty building right on the Village Green with a duck pond and inevitably some small boys playing round it.

As he drew the horses to a stop, Vasila woke up.

“I have been – asleep,” she yawned.

“For hours and hours,” he replied. “In point of fact it is already tomorrow.”

Vasila laughed and looked round her.

“Where are we?” she asked him.

“A long way from Windsor and, if you are not now hungry, then I am.”

“Are we going to have breakfast?”

“As it is nearly midday, it is time for luncheon,” he replied. “You slept through what was left of the night and breakfast.”

“I am – sorry,” she murmured meekly.

“There is no need to apologise. I prefer when I am driving not to have chatty women diverting my attention.”

Vasila laughed again.

While Kelvin was seeing to the horses in the yard, she went into the inn.

An elderly woman then took her upstairs where she could wash her hands and face in cold water and she felt better when she had done so.

At the same time, when she looked into the mirror, she was horrified at her appearance.

Because she had dressed in such a hurry, she had only tied her hair at the back of her neck and she had not stopped to arrange it.

It made her look very young. In fact nothing more than a schoolgirl.

She wondered if Kelvin thought her as immature as she looked.

‘So I must try to talk to him intelligently,’ she told herself. ‘otherwise he will be sorry that he has been kind enough to take me away with him.
